Texas Compounding Pharmacy invites patients to visit our facility and talk to our staff at any time.  Please call us at (888) 382-7301. Answers to some of the questions we hear asked most frequently are provided below.

Q: WHAT IS COMPOUNDING?

A: Compounding essentially means customized medicine. It demands that a qualified pharmacist create a specific formula to fit your unique needs.

Q: WHAT KINDS OF DRUGS ARE COMPOUNDED?

A: Physicians may prescribe an individually compounded medication for a patient with an unusual health need. This allows the physician to tailor a prescription to the individual. Compounding preparations are especially prevalent for:

  • Conditions for which commercially available products are not effective.
  • Conditions that are especially difficult to treat due to their location.
  • Conditions where a combination of drugs is desirable to offset side effects.
  • Conditions where a dosage needs to be carefully titrated, or increased in very small, precise, increments.
  • Conditions where it’s preferable to treat the location rather than the entire body (as in a pain cream versus an oral drug
  • Multiple conditions that may be treated by one dosage using a compound with multiple ingredients.

Q: WILL A COMPOUND COST MORE?

A: Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It usually depends on your insurance coverage and the type of compound being prepared. Often the cost is the same because you are getting one medication that could only be replaced with two or more commercially available products. Regardless, many of our clients tell us they find incredible value in what we do, given how different it is than more commercialized drug manufacturing.

Q: WHY IS A COMPOUND RECOMMENDED?

A: Compounds may be recommended to:

  • Change the form of the medication such as from a tablet to a cream.
  • Combine multiple medications into one formula.
  • Avoid systemic side effects of commercial products (i.e. a topical that can be applied to a particular site as opposed to a high oral dose that affects the entire body).
  • Obtain a more precise dose, as compounding allows for ingredients in specific amounts according to each patient’s particular needs.
  • Replace a drug that is no longer commercially available.
